AST SpaceMobile (ASTS) is building the first, and only, global broadband cellular network in space to operate directly with mobile devices, allowing users to have access to network anywhere in the world.

Even we are currently in the 21st century, a lot of the population in the world still does not have access to the internet. It is estimated that around half of the population remains unconnected with top-tier stable networks. AST SpaceMobile is trying to counter this problem by transforming how the world connects with the world’s first global broadband cellular network in space to operate directly with mobile devices. So what does this do? The space-based cellular broadband network allows coverage everywhere in the world from cities to rural areas.

This used to be impossible as the connection will be lost instantly when the mobile phone is out of the cell tower’s connectivity range. So how do they do this? SpaceMobile low earth orbit network uses their patented powerful satellites to provide automatic roaming from land networks to space. The space-based low-latency broadband architecture will act like a “space cell tower” to provide a direct link to mobile devices. This can be done because unlike the cell tower on land which is fixed in place, multiple satellites will orbit around the world to ensure to signal is able to be received anywhere. Therefore leveraging its patented technology it is able to provide 4G and 5G networks anywhere and everywhere.

The service is compatible with 5 billion phones worldwide and can integrate the service seamlessly. It also has high-quality data rates with low latency so you won’t worry about lagging all the time. The company also said that they are able to drive the price down for consumers allowing more emerging countries to gain access to the much-needed service. The company has already executed commercial agreements with telecom giants AT&T and Vodafone. The company is still executing this ambitious game-changing project but with a lot of large companies such as Rakuten backing it, I believe the company will succeed in the long term and change the way on how our devices connect.
